A fierce fire gutted Mukuru Kwa Njenga near Muhindi Mweusi in Nairobi County on the night of Monday, September 16, leaving 100 households reduced to ashes.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident early on Tuesday morning. It had deployed emergency response teams to assist.
“Our teams were on the ground quite quickly,” said a Kenya Red Cross spokesperson. “We worked alongside Nairobi County Fire Brigade and the local police.
This was contained with the help of all concerned. Community-based disaster responders also played a vital role in containing this fire. The quick response helped limit further damage.
At the scene, one was given on-scene medical treatment. The emergency responders provided all the necessary care at the site. “We provided the necessary care promptly,” added the spokesperson. This fire followed another recent disaster. Just days earlier, on September 14, a fire had ravaged Jua Kali Green Corner in Embakasi. That blaze destroyed 24 homes.
The fire that occurred in Embakasi happened at 1:00 a.m. The Nairobi City County Fire Brigade responded quickly with the one from Kenya Red Cross. They extinguished the fire effectively.
The recent fires really put a heavy burden on the affected communities. Both incidents are bound by the urgency for coordinated emergency responses.
The Kenya Red Cross pledged continued support to the affected persons. They are on the ground trying to help bring relief and assistance to the displaced families. Community members are thankful and have thanked the responders. They acknowledged the effort by the Kenya Red Cross, County Fire Brigade, and local police.
