AZIMIO LA UMOJA COALITION CALLS FOR ELECTORAL RECONSTITUTION
During their commemoration of Saba Saba Day in Meru, leaders from the Azimio la Umoja coalition, including former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Senator Enock Wambua, and former Cabinet Secretaries Eugene Wamalwa and Peter Munya, rallied for the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to facilitate a snap election. They voiced full support for Generation Z’s nationwide protests against the Kenya Kwanza government and the National Assembly, attributing economic and societal issues to their governance.
Musyoka emphasized the urgency of passing the IEBC Amendment Bill 2024, which would pave the way for a revamped electoral body. He criticized cosmetic changes and called for substantive reforms, dismissing superficial cabinet reshuffles as inadequate responses to public discontent. He also criticized President Ruto’s creation of a task force on public debt, arguing it bypassed the constitutional mandate of the Auditor General.
Acknowledging the Senate’s stance on accountability amidst spreading protests, Musyoka accused the National Assembly of betraying the youth’s trust and failing to address their grievances. He pledged Azimio’s solidarity with dissatisfied Kenyans, aligning their cause with the coalition’s agenda.
Peter Munya commended the youth for demanding governmental accountability, stressing their rejection of lavish government spending amid citizen suffering and unchecked taxation. He echoed Musyoka’s sentiment that cosmetic changes would not placate the public’s demands, emphasizing the need for comprehensive governmental overhaul.
In conclusion, both leaders affirmed that the future of Kenya rested with its youth, urging them to persist in demanding transparent governance and tangible results. They underscored Azimio la Umoja’s commitment to supporting the aspirations of Generation Z, emphasizing that only substantive reforms would satisfy the public’s expectations for accountable leadership.
