LAVINGTON UNITED CHURCH FORCED TO CANCEL FUNDRAISER AFTER UPROAR FROM THE YOUTH
‘Salimieni huyo’ a common slogan used by the Kenyan Gen Z. The Lavington United Church, has been compelled to cancel the fundraising which was to be held on 30th June, 2024. Kenyan First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto was stated to be the Guest Of Honor in the event which was aimed to raise funds for completion of the sanctuary. This happened after an invitation card for the fundraiser circulated online raising an uproar from the youth online.
From an invitation seen online signed by Rev. Simon Mutahi stated, “The pastoral team and church leadership cordially invites you to a fundraising event to complete our sanctuary on 30th June, 2024 from 10 AM at Lavington united Church. Her Excellency, First lady Of The Republic Of Kenya , Mama Rachel Ruto will grace the event. Your presence and generous contribution will be highly appreciated.”
These angered the youth who claimed that the politicians were responsible for the mass killing of innocent protesters and they would be in attendance to counter the politics in church.
After the Reverend’s number surfaced online youths took to his whatsapp and sms warning him against hosting the First Lady at the event.
A text message seen online sent by a man identified as Mwabili to the Reverent Father Mutahi stated that the youths were coming for him and the church leadership after inviting the First Lady and they would occupy the church and stop the fundraiser at all cost.
The reverent was forced to cancel the event. In a post from Rev. Mutahi he acknowledged the youths concern and encouraged the youths telling them that the church gate was open to them and even went ahead to inbvite them for the church service tomorrow.
The youths remain unshaken in a move for a changed Republic at large.
