Athletics Kenya officials have lauded the great performance by the World Athletics Under 20 Championships team for their exemplary performance in Lima, Peru.
With two gold medals, two silver and a bronze, the team has said that the 2025
World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan and 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA will be have a great team coming from the juniors.
Led by the senior vice president Paul Mutwi, they said that the performance has impressed Kenyans and they will continue harvesting medals on the last day tomorrow, Saturday.
“This is my first to accompany such team to world under 20 championships and they are disciplined. The discipline is great and that is why they are doing very well,” said Mutwi who was accompanied by Youth Committee chairman Barnaba Korir and Treasurer David Miano.
With chilly in the Peru capital, Mutwii said that the cold weather the athletes must be affected.
“I want to assure Kenyans that the athletes have adjusted and they are doing well. At the same time, I want to assure Kenyans that the way we are working with them, the future is guaranteed and this will make a good team to Tokyo world championships and Olympics in 2028 will be here with great medals coming our way,” he said.
Korir said that the athletes are doing well and they are happy as a country.
“With dynamics in athletics where many countries are competing and we are very happy with their performance. There are dynamics in sports and its becoming very tough but it is a way of learning from each other.
As a department, we can feel the fruits that we have been doing in the last four years with youth camps where we have produced a good number of athletes. We shall have many athletes as we continue with this program and we thank the government for supporting the youth program in the Athletics Kenya,” said Korir.
Back home, he said that Kenyans are happy with the results and they are waiting to see more since they are optimistic that they will do well in the remaining events now that the games ends tomorrow.
“What they have done so far is very good and we must appreciate them. We want them to have a successful transition into the seniors,” he said.
He said that all the athletes and officials have been paid their allowances.
“With all allowances paid to athletes, we must thank the government though the ministry of sports and sports fund they have done a very good job. The athletes have been paid their money,” concluded Korir.
