Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is under intense scrutiny after he failed to appear before the Senate Standing Committee on Education to discuss key education initiatives in the city county.

The committee had summoned Sakaja to provide updates on the status, challenges, and budget allocations concerning Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres across Nairobi. However, the governor canceled his attendance at the last minute, sparking sharp criticism.

Senators expressed frustration at what they described as blatant disregard for the Senate’s oversight mandate. Nominated Senator Margaret Kamar emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “This is about decency and accountability. It is within the Committee’s discretion to summon the Governor.”

Nominated Senator Agnes Kavindu called for tougher consequences, pushing for fines for such absences to be levied personally on the governor. “It is high time we enforce the Standing Orders and impose fines from his personal capacity,” she remarked.

Senator Seki Ole Kanar (Kajiado) echoed the sentiment, warning that the Senate must now consider taking legal action against Sakaja for his repeated snubs.

The Committee, empowered under Article 125 of the Constitution and Senate Standing Orders, has resolved to formally summon the governor to appear and deliver a comprehensive report on Nairobi’s education projects and finances.

Senator Joseph Kinyua (Laikipia) reiterated the committee’s firm stance: “We have no other option but to summon the Governor. Our authority is constitutionally backed.”

This latest incident adds to Sakaja’s history of clashes with parliamentary committees. In April 2024, he missed a session with the Energy Committee, leading to a Ksh500,000 fine and calls for his arrest.

The Senate now awaits the governor’s formal response as pressure mounts on Nairobi’s leadership to prioritize transparency and education development.
