The family of Daniel Nderitu, a resident of Nakuru’s London area, is seeking justice after he was fatally shot in an incident involving police officers. Nderitu’s tragic death has sparked outrage, with his loved ones and the local community condemning the alleged excessive use of force by law enforcement.

Fatal Confrontation with Police
According to witnesses, the incident unfolded during a confrontation between police and residents. Reports indicate that Nderitu, 47, was shot twice by officers who arrived in a double-cabin vehicle and apprehended a young man on allegations of possessing bhang. Patrick Kariuki, a local resident, described the harrowing scene:
“Police arrived with a Hilton and a double cabin, arrested a young man, and accused him of having bhang. When he resisted, he was shot in the back. They removed his handcuffs and fired another shot, hitting him in the chest.”
A Family in Mourning
Nderitu, the family’s breadwinner, relied on mining jobs to support his four children. His death is the latest tragedy for the family, who had already endured the loss of his wife in 2023 and his child last year. His sister, Zipporah Njeri, expressed her grief and frustration:
“He was perfectly healthy. The government should stop killing us. He had done nothing wrong.”
Patrick Mwangi, Nderitu’s brother, echoed her sentiments, saying, “He had no issues with anyone. We just want justice.”
Community Outcry and Unrest
The London area has been tense since the incident, with residents protesting Nderitu’s death. Businesses have been disrupted, and demonstrations have led to clashes between police and protesters. One resident, Isaac Sambili, expressed the community’s anger and fear:
“We’ve had no peace. They claim it was a stray bullet, but a life has been lost.”
Another resident, Josephat Kipkosgei, added, “Work has come to a standstill. Bodaboda riders have gone home, scared. Youths are mourning and asking who we’re serving when our own are dying.”
Investigations Underway
Four witnesses have recorded statements with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), as the family demands accountability and answers surrounding Nderitu’s death. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death, while preparations for his burial are ongoing.
The police have maintained a heavy presence in the area to prevent further protests, but tensions remain high as the community seeks justice.
