Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja has disclosed that the late Albert Ojwang’s arrest stemmed from a defamation complaint filed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Eliud Kipkoech Lagat. Speaking to the press on Monday, IG Kanja confirmed that DIG Lagat sought legal protection against alleged defamation, triggering an expedited investigation.

Defamation Complaint Sparks Arrest
“The DIG lodged a complaint regarding defamation of his name. The law protects everyone, including those serving in public office, and investigations were initiated accordingly,” IG Kanja stated during the briefing.
Albert Ojwang was arrested on Saturday at his home in Homa Bay County and transported to Nairobi. However, tragedy struck when he was found unconscious in his cell at Central Police Station on Sunday. Despite being rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, Ojwang was pronounced dead on arrival.
Controversial Circumstances of Death
A police report claims Ojwang sustained head injuries from allegedly hitting his head repeatedly against the wall of his cell. This account has drawn widespread criticism, with many questioning the circumstances leading to his injuries.
IG Kanja confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also launched a parallel probe, with its Chairperson, Isaac Hassan, emphasizing the commitment to justice for Ojwang’s family.
“I watched Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, on television. His emotional plea touched everyone. IPOA will ensure that justice prevails,” Hassan assured.
Interdictions and Political Fallout
Officers who were on duty at the time of Ojwang’s detention have been interdicted and are being interrogated to uncover the truth behind the incident.
Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for DIG Lagat’s suspension, holding him accountable for Ojwang’s arrest and subsequent death. Gachagua criticized the transfer of Ojwang from Homa Bay to Nairobi, alleging that Central and Kamukunji Police Stations have become “new torture chambers.”
“The DIG must take responsibility for this tragedy. It is unacceptable for any citizen to die under such circumstances,” Gachagua stated.
Public Outcry and Calls for Justice
The mysterious death has ignited public outrage, with calls for comprehensive reforms in how detainees are handled. Advocacy groups and human rights organizations have also joined the push for transparency and accountability.
