St Anthony’s Kitale are the new Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association soccer champions.
Popularly known as the Solidarity Boys, St Anthony beat Dagoretti High School 2-0 in an entertaining final watched by a capacity crowd at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County.
Player of the tournament Adrian Kibet and Wycliffe Oduor were on target for the Saints in the game that was officiated by Simon Ongaga.
The final was played at Bukhungu Stadium and was graced by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, his Sports counterpart Ababu Namwamba Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya among other leaders.
In the play-off, Shanderema walloped Nyanza’s Agoro Sare 5-1 to book a place in the East Africa secondary schools championships to be held in Huye, Rwanda.
In the girls category, Butere Girls are the new champions after a hard-fought 1-0 against former East Africa Secondary schools champions Wiyeta from Tranz Nzoia County.
In the play-off, Madira Girls edged Dagoretti Mixed Secondary 1-0 to take third place.
In boys’ volleyball, Ruthimitu beat Andersen 3-2 in a five-set thriller to win their maiden title while Kesogon dethroned African champions Kwanthanze after edging them 3-1 in a tough final.
Nyanza’s Oyugi Ogango beat Kukokholo 50-45 to win the netball title while Koyonzo retained the rugby 7’s title after beating Vihiga High 22-12. St Mary’s Yala beat Kitondo 22-10 in the third place playoff.
All the 16 teams that represented their regions at the nationals were kitted by former internationals George Owino Kempes and Sammy Sholei.
Three top teams will represent Kenya at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games to be held in Huye, Rwanda.
