Kenyan teams arrived in Rwanda on Thursday evening ahead of the AFederation of Eastica Secondary School Sports Association games.
The games will start on Saturday and finish on August 29 at Huye in Rwanda. The teams spent a night in Mbarara, Uganda, and departed for Rwanda on Thursday morning.
Kenya’s soccer defending champions St Anthony’s Kitale will face Tanzania’s Kalangalala, Amus College, and St Henry’s College Kitovu from Uganda, CGFK from Rwanda, and Kenya’s other representatives Shanderema in Pool ‘A’.
Kenya’s other representative, Dagoretti, faces a Herculean task against Uganda’s St Mary’s Kitende and Kibuli Senior School in Pool ‘B’. Other teams in the pool are Kiwira Coal Mine from Tanzania and Rwanda’s Ecose Musambira. Uganda’s Kibuli are the defending champions.
However, Kenyan giants St Anthony’s Kitale has vowed to lift the title for the first time. “This is the only trophy that is missing from our cabinet. We are going for it. I know St Mary’s Kitende has dominated the championship but I can assure you the Solidarity Boys are ready to challenge for the title,” said Kitale’s coach Peter Mayoyo.
In the girls’ category, Pool ‘A’ has Kenya’s Butere Girls and Madira face a herculean task against Dedefindg champions St Noa Girls from Uganda, Rwanda’s GS Gatizo, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim, and Tanzania’s Ziba.
Former girls’ football champions Wiyeta Girls will be keen to reclaim their title. However, they will have to overcome Fountain Gate (Tanzania), Sacred Heart Gulu (Uganda), Amus College School (Uganda), and Apaer (Rwanda).
Wiyeta coach Edgar Manyara is keen to reclaim the title that he lost to St Noah Girls last year. “Even though we lost our national title to Butere Girls, we are going to Rwanda to revenge against them and St Noah,” he said.
