The government of Kenya has announced plans to make it mandatory for all road constructions within major cities to have a corridor that will accommodate non-motorized transport.
Speaking during the 27TH world Road Congress in Prague, the Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen said that Kenya has adopted a national transport policy that will make this possible.
“As a country what we have adopted the national transport policy is in the final stages that is to be approved by parliament for adoption, “said Murkomen.
“Parliament is in the process of adopting a private members bill to incorporate non-motorized transport including cycling lanes will be a mandatory, requirement for all future road contractions within urban areas, “said Murkomen.
He further stated that road agencies are remodeling roads to accommodate non-motorizes transport where possible. He also added that cyclists and pedestrians are competing with two wheeled vehicles like motorbikes for the same spaces provided for non-motorized transports.
The main topics of the summit are mobility and infrastructure. The 27th Congress will also focus on reaching out to the general public, with an emphasis on maximizing youth engagement and safety awareness.
