A Mombasa-based doctor, Dias Jumba Wabwire, has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually assaulting a patient at Pandya Hospital. The allegations have sparked outrage and calls for accountability from rights organizations.

Court Proceedings
Dr. Wabwire was presented before Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku at the Mombasa High Court on Monday, February 3, 2025. He faces a single charge of rape, which allegedly occurred on January 31, 2025, at 5 a.m. while the victim was receiving dialysis services at the hospital.
The accused denied the charges and was released on a Ksh.500,000 bond with a surety of the same amount. The court has scheduled the case’s mention for February 17, 2025.
FIDA Condemns the Incident
The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has strongly condemned the alleged assault, highlighting that this was not the first instance involving the same suspect. Jane Onyango, a lawyer with FIDA, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and accountability for all individuals complicit in obstructing justice.
“The DCI and ODPP must also investigate and charge staff members who were aware of the incident but failed to act. FIDA is committed to ensuring the survivor receives justice,” Onyango stated.
Broader Implications
This case has drawn attention to the critical issue of safeguarding patients in healthcare facilities. Trust between patients and medical professionals is essential, and breaches of this trust can have devastating consequences.
Rights groups and healthcare advocates are urging authorities to adopt stricter protocols for monitoring and addressing misconduct in healthcare settings. Additionally, they are calling for robust mechanisms to ensure survivors of such incidents receive the justice and support they deserve.
Next Steps
As the case unfolds, stakeholders, including FIDA, have vowed to actively monitor the proceedings and advocate for justice for the survivor. The legal and medical communities are also under pressure to take swift and transparent action to restore public confidence in healthcare institutions.
