The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a critical advisory, urging residents in several regions to prepare for strong winds and large ocean waves over the next three days. This alert impacts areas in the Coast, south-eastern lowlands, and north-western Kenya.

Regions on High Alert
Residents in Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale have been cautioned to anticipate strong southerly winds exceeding 30 knots (15.4 m/s) starting Friday, May 23, 2025.
The wind speeds are predicted to intensify, reaching more than 35 knots (18.0 m/s) by Saturday and Sunday before easing to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) on Monday, May 26.
Ocean Waves Pose Additional Threat
In addition to strong winds, Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Tana River are expected to experience large ocean waves with heights exceeding 2 meters. These waves are forecasted to persist through Sunday, May 25, before subsiding below 2 meters by Monday.
Kenya Met emphasized the potential hazards, stating that gale-force winds could damage structures, blow off roofs, and create dangerous conditions for marine activities. Large waves could also reduce visibility, posing risks for maritime operations.
Probability and Weather Conditions
The department noted a moderate probability of occurrence, with a 33–66% likelihood of these events materializing. This advisory comes amid ongoing heavy rainfall across various regions, leading to flooding and displacement of families.
Rains and Cold Weather to Persist
According to Kenya Met, rainfall will continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Coastal regions, and parts of north-western Kenya. Additionally, Kenyans are advised to prepare for colder nights as temperatures are expected to drop to as low as 9°C in some areas.
Safety Measures
Residents in the affected regions are urged to:
- Secure loose structures and roofs.
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to strong winds.
- Exercise caution near coastal areas and avoid venturing into the sea.
- Stay updated with weather advisories and follow safety recommendations.
By taking these precautions, communities can mitigate the risks posed by these extreme weather conditions.
