Detectives have arrested Jared Mong’are, the prime suspect in the brutal murder of Deka Abdinoor Gorone, whose mutilated body was dumped at Lang’ata Cemetery last week. Mong’are was apprehended in Eldoret following investigations that linked him to suspicious transactions and activities related to the crime.
According to the DCI, Mong’are facilitated the payment for the stay of the victim at Lavington Valley Heights Apartment and drove a vehicle, a Toyota Vitz that was later abandoned in Ngara, which detectives say was used in the crime. The motorcar has since been impounded for forensic examination.
The DCI recovered several exhibits, including a blood-stained panga suspected to be the murder weapon. Investigators established that the apartment where the prime suspect, Hashim Dagane Muhumed, stayed with the victim operated as an Airbnb. The unit was managed by a Kilimani-based businesswoman who subleased it from owner Alice Mbiya.
Mbiya is said to have issued a rent increase notice effective November 2024, which compelled the Airbnb operator to leave the premises on November 1. This coincided with the CCTV footage, where Muhumed is captured leaving the apartment on October 31, 2023, carrying two bags suspected to be carrying the victim’s remains.
During these operations of the operator’s Airbnb in Kilimani and business premises in Gatundu, detectives recovered crucial evidence that included the blood-stained panga, among other items recovered at the scene of Lang’ata Cemetery. Efforts to clean traces of blood were seen on the items but were not thorough. A handbag believed to belong to Gorone was also recovered.
Further investigations revealed that Muhumed had in possession Gorone’s mobile phone or SIM card, which he used to contact her family members. This led detectives to Lang’ata Cemetery, where a phone and some clothes believed to be what Gorone last wore before disappearing were recovered.
The final moments of Gorone’s life were captured on CCTV on October 29, where she was captured doing some shopping in Nairobi before retiring to the Lavington apartment accompanied by Muhumed. On the following day, Muhumed left with several bags suspected to be carrying her dismembered body.
Complicating matters, the apartment owner reportedly cleaned up and repainted before going into hiding. Police are now hunting for the owner, who is also suspected of murdering three women in Eastleigh.
As detectives reconstruct what led to Gorone’s tragic end, a chilling trail of evidence has been uncovered.
