TRAGEDY IN MUKURU: ALL KWARE POLICE STATION OFFICERS TRANSFERED AMID INVESTIGATIONS LED BY NEW INSPECTOR GENERAL

The new Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja,
has transferred all police stationed at Kware Police Station after at least
eight lifeless bodies were discovered in a quarry in Nairobi’s Mukuru
slums.

The new police boss, however, said the transfer is
likely to be done to observe the rule of law in fair and objective
investigations after bodies were found. Kanja said six bodies were retrieved on Friday, July
12, and the rest on Saturday.

“Yesterday, five other bags were recovered from
the quarry. Three of them contained parts of the human body, two others
contained a dead dog, and one contained garbage,” stated Kanja.”The eight bodies recovered are still at the
Nairobi Funeral Home, City Mortuary for preservation.

The scene is still active
and the investigations are still on.”Preliminary investigations have established that all
recovered bodies were of women, badly mutilated, at different states of
decomposition, and wrapped in sacks, Kanja said. Police Reforms Working Groups
had put the number of bodies recovered from the scene at 13 – claiming eight
bodies were retrieved on Friday and five yesterday.

The number, of five bodies, given on Saturday by the
PRWGs was established by the number of sacks picked from the quarry before they
were opened at the City mortuary where only three of them were found to be
containing body parts.Kanja said the entire National Police Service and
himself understand the deep concerns and distress the tragedy brings to the
families, residents of Kware and his fellow Kenyans.

“The police service and I want to assure the
public that we have the commitment towards transparent, in-depth, and speedy
investigations. Our departmental resources and officers, in collaboration with
the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions, are working tirelessly to ensure
the end of investigation within 21 days,” Kanja asserted.

“Further, we will ensure that there is
transparency on the post-mortem examination of the body in liaison with
relevant stakeholders including media and civil society. To ensure the fairness
in the investigations, I have moved all the officers from Kware police
station.

“Investigations are being spearheaded by the Homicides
Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and are still at the scene
exercising the search and recovery of any other bodies, if any, at the scene. He urged the residents of Kware and the whole country
to be patient and calm and give enough time to the officers to conclude the
investigations, adding, “We stand together in supporting the community and
remain committed to uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible into
justice.”
