Security forces in Migori County have rescued 57 sick individuals from the Melkio Joseph Mission Messiah Church in Rongo, halting its prayer activities amid growing concerns over its controversial practices.

Rongo Deputy County Commissioner George Matundura led the operation on Monday night. Speaking after the raid, Matundura explained that the rescue was prompted by reports of two deaths at the church within the past week. “We will be taking further legal action, and the church is now under strict police surveillance,” he stated.

Allegations of Misconduct

The raid came just hours after a family from Nyamira County stormed the church, demanding the body of their kin who had died while seeking healing there. The family accused the church of planning to bury their loved one on its premises without their consent.

Jacita Achieng, the deceased’s daughter who has reportedly lived at the church for over a decade, claimed her father’s will stipulated that he be buried at the church. However, this claim has sparked a dispute with the family, further adding to the controversies surrounding the institution.

Community Outrage

Residents and local authorities have raised alarms about the church’s activities, describing them as harmful and exploitative. This latest incident has intensified calls for tighter regulation of religious organizations to prevent such cases in the future.

Next Steps

Law enforcement officers are conducting further investigations into the church’s operations. The rescued patients are receiving medical attention, and authorities have pledged to ensure justice for those affected by the church’s alleged negligence.
