Lamu County— Tragedy struck in the Rakei area of Boni Forest, Lamu County, when five police officers lost their lives, and eight others sustained injuries in a brazen attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

Details of the Attack
Lamu Police Commissioner Wesley Koech confirmed the ambush, stating that preliminary investigations revealed a group of over 70 heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters attempted to cross into Lamu from Garissa via the Bodhei-Lamu border. The officers, part of the elite Special Operations Group (SOG), encountered the militants in a fierce exchange.
The injured officers and the bodies of the fallen were promptly airlifted to Nairobi for medical care and forensic examinations.
Strategic Target
The confrontation occurred just 3 kilometers from the Lamu border. Commissioner Koech suggested that the militants were likely attempting to infiltrate Kenya for planned terror activities. “This was a calculated move to destabilize the region, but our officers responded courageously,” Koech noted.
Call for Vigilance
In light of the attack, Commissioner Koech urged local communities to be extra vigilant and report any unusual activities or unfamiliar individuals in their areas. “The fight against terrorism requires collaboration between the public and security forces. Your vigilance can save lives,” he added.
Ongoing Counter-Terror Operations
The government has reiterated its commitment to bolstering security in Lamu and other border areas prone to militant incursions. Enhanced surveillance, patrols, and intelligence-sharing are underway to prevent further incidents.
The Boni Forest region, a known hideout for Al-Shabaab operatives, has been a hotspot for militant activity, prompting intensified counter-terror operations under the Linda Boni initiative.
Nationwide Concern
This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab, not only in border regions but across Kenya. It highlights the need for increased vigilance, inter-agency coordination, and sustained efforts to neutralize the militant threat.
The nation mourns the brave officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect Kenya’s sovereignty.
