A man accused of arson met a tragic end in Muthwani Village, Matungulu Constituency, Machakos County, after being lynched and burned by an angry mob on Sunday afternoon.
Community Takes Drastic Action
The suspect was allegedly responsible for setting a family home ablaze. According to residents, he had a reputation for theft and other criminal activities in the area, which fueled the mob’s outrage. Villagers had spent hours tracking him down before cornering him near a church and taking matters into their own hands.
Eyewitness Accounts
Philip Lonje, a respected senior resident and former Chief’s office coordinator, confirmed the incident.
“I saw the suspect run past my home towards the church, with the mob in pursuit. They caught up with him and took action,” Lonje recounted, adding that he had previously reported the suspect to police in Kinungi and Tala for unrelated offenses.
Another witness, Jerry Wambua, described the horrifying scene.
“The mob set him on fire, and despite being injured, the suspect attempted to run before succumbing to the flames,” Wambua said.
Police Investigations Underway
Authorities from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Tala are investigating both the arson case and the mob justice incident.
Police confirmed that no injuries were reported from the fire incident that triggered the attack. The suspect’s remains were transported to Kangundo Hospital Level 4 morgue for further processing.
