Authorities in the Nyanza region have initiated a sweeping operation targeting unregistered churches across Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira counties. The move aims to curb religious extremism and unauthorized practices within these institutions, according to Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworia.

Focus on Public Safety and Accountability

During a press conference at St. Joseph’s Missions of Messiah church in Migori on Monday, April 29, Mworia stressed the urgency of addressing unregulated religious practices. This announcement followed a harrowing incident at the church, where multiple deaths were reported, and dozens of individuals were rescued under troubling conditions.

“We are committed to conducting a thorough crackdown on all unregistered churches to protect the community from radicalization and harmful teachings,” Mworia declared. She called for close collaboration between security agencies and the public, emphasizing that community vigilance is crucial in identifying and addressing suspicious activities.

Government Officers Under Scrutiny

Mworia also issued a stern warning to government officials who may be complicit in enabling unregistered churches to operate. “It is disheartening to learn that some officers are colluding with these churches to flout the law. We will hold them accountable and ensure that such actions are eradicated,” she added.

Details of the St. Joseph’s Missions of Messiah Incident

The crackdown announcement comes in the wake of an April 20 raid at St. Joseph’s Missions of Messiah church in Rongo sub-county, Migori. The operation, led by the local security and intelligence committee, uncovered two deceased individuals within the church compound.

According to a police report from Kamagambo Police Station, one body was found in a prayer room, wrapped in white robes and grey sheets, with visible injuries and foam oozing from the mouth. The scene was documented, and the body was transported to Rosewood Mortuary for further investigation.

Rescue and Resistance

In addition to the deceased, authorities rescued 57 individuals aged between 5 and 77, who were found in frail and weakened states. The group was taken to Rongo sub-county Hospital for medical attention but resisted examinations, choosing instead to sing religious hymns.

Medical personnel eventually recommended their removal from the hospital due to disturbances caused to other patients. The group was subsequently taken into police custody as investigations continued.

Community Vigilance Encouraged

The raid was initiated after a tip-off from the Kanyadiedo sub-location Assistant Chief, who reported unusual activities at the church. Commissioner Mworia emphasized that public cooperation is vital to ensuring such cases are brought to light and addressed promptly.

“Police and chiefs cannot be everywhere at once, so the information provided by the public is invaluable,” Mworia stated.

Regional Implications

This crackdown signals the government’s heightened resolve to regulate religious institutions and prevent the exploitation of vulnerable populations. Mworia’s directive serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability, community involvement, and strict adherence to the law to maintain public safety and order.

As investigations into the St. Joseph’s Missions of Messiah incident continue, authorities are urging residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities.
