A chilling discovery has left the residents of Sotik, Bomet County, in disbelief after police apprehended a man accused of slaughtering a dog and attempting to sell its meat as regular beef to unsuspecting customers.

The suspect, 38-year-old Richard Kigen, was arrested on Friday following a tip-off to Sotik Township Assistant Chief Madam Emma, who immediately reported the incident to the police.

Suspicious Meat Raises Alarm

Concerned locals from Chemagel and Kimase raised suspicions over unusual meat being sold in the area. Acting swiftly, the police conducted a raid and recovered approximately 15 kilograms of red dog meat, neatly packed in plastic gunny bags and ready for distribution.

Upon questioning, Kigen confessed to the act, admitting he had planned to sell the meat without disclosing its true origin.

Veterinary Investigation Underway

The Bomet County Veterinary Department has since taken samples of the meat for further analysis. Officials are working to confirm its composition and investigate whether similar cases may have occurred in the region.

The police revealed that Kigen will face charges under the Meat Control Act (CAP 356) for slaughtering and selling meat from an undeclared animal. He may also face charges of animal cruelty.

Authorities Issue Public Warning

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when purchasing meat. “It is crucial for consumers to ensure they buy meat from licensed and approved sources,” the police emphasized in a statement.

The incident has sparked fear and outrage among residents, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring of meat distribution channels.

Legal and Community Repercussions

As investigations continue, Kigen remains in police custody. This case has stirred widespread discussions on public health, animal rights, and the necessity of vigilance in food safety practices.

Authorities have pledged to strengthen enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future and restore public trust in the local food supply.
