Kenya’s Government Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, has defended Tanzania’s recent decision to deny entry to Kenyan lawyer and politician Martha Karua, labeling it a sovereign action unrelated to her political affiliations.

Tanzania Exercising Sovereign Rights

Addressing the matter on Monday, Mwaura clarified that Tanzania’s move to deport Karua should not be interpreted as politically motivated.

“Every government has the sovereign right to decide who can enter its borders, regardless of their political stance. This decision had nothing to do with her role as an opposition leader in Kenya,” he said.

Mwaura emphasized that Tanzania’s stance reflects its internal considerations and is not a cause for Kenya to question.

No Impact on Diplomatic Relations

The spokesperson assured that Kenya’s diplomatic ties with Tanzania remain solid, stating, “There is no diplomatic fallout between Kenya and Tanzania. Sovereign states have the authority to admit or deny entry to anyone, and this case was no different.”

Mwaura dismissed speculation of political motives, highlighting that other opposition leaders, such as Raila Odinga, have traveled freely to Tanzania in the past without any issues.

Government’s Stand on Law and Order

Mwaura also touched on allegations of political bias in recent arrests within Kenya, including the detention of MP Peter Salasya, reiterating that these actions are based on individual conduct rather than political affiliation.

“There are no targeted persecutions. Arrests are lawful and are carried out to maintain law and order,” he explained.

He addressed concerns about heightened security presence at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s residence, asserting that no individual is exempt from the law.

“The government’s role is to uphold peace and security. Anyone inciting violence, regardless of their political standing, will face consequences,” Mwaura stated.

Upholding Stability Amid Political Tensions

Mwaura concluded by stressing that Kenya’s commitment to law enforcement remains steadfast, adding that maintaining national stability is the government’s top priority.

“Propaganda aside, the government’s actions are geared toward ensuring order and protecting Kenyans from incitement,” he remarked.
