Homa Bay: Two Suspects Arrested After Pastor’s Car Burned by Residents
Authorities in Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay County, have detained two individuals in connection with the torching of a pastor’s car in Jwela village, Ramula location. The incident occurred amid suspicions that the vehicle was associated with cattle rustling activities, a growing concern among the locals.
The pastor had reportedly driven to the village to meet a female companion and parked his car along the road leading to River Miriu. Residents, already on high alert due to frequent livestock thefts, grew suspicious of the unfamiliar vehicle.
Villagers Take Matters into Their Own Hands
According to witnesses, residents first spotted the parked car at around 8:30 PM and decided to act. They erected roadblocks with boulders and kept a close watch on the vehicle until its owner returned.
“When the pastor came back to his car, he was ambushed, and his lady companion fled into the darkness,” a witness revealed. “Although the pastor tried to escape, he was pushed back into the car before finally managing to flee with injuries.”
Following the altercation, enraged villagers set the vehicle on fire.
Police Intervention and Ongoing Investigations
Ramula location chief, Judith Gumbo Ayodo, confirmed that two suspects have been arrested and are being held at Senta Sori police station. She emphasized that investigations are underway to establish the exact details surrounding the incident.
Chief Ayodo urged residents to avoid mob justice, warning that anyone caught breaking the law would face prosecution. “Taking the law into your own hands only worsens the situation. Report incidents to the authorities for proper action,” she stated.
A Recurring Problem
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the area. Just last month, a vehicle suspected of being used by cattle rustlers was set ablaze in Kakoth village after two suspects were caught loading a stolen cow into the car. During that incident, one suspect was lynched while the other narrowly escaped.
The theft of livestock using small vehicles in broad daylight has become a significant concern for residents. In the Kakoth case, authorities recovered several vehicle number plates from the suspects’ car, adding to suspicions of a larger livestock theft syndicate.
Conclusion
The recent torching of the pastor’s car highlights the growing frustration among residents over rising crime. However, law enforcement officials stress the importance of addressing such issues through legal channels to prevent unnecessary violence and destruction of property.
