Court Dismisses Gachagua’s Final Attempt to Halt Senate Impeachment Proceedings - Kenyan News

Ongoing Deputy President Gachagua’s Impeachment at the Senate

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is in a precarious position as he faces the Senate in a high-stakes impeachment process. To avoid removal, Gachagua needs at least 23 senators to vote in his favor, but security around Parliament Road has already been significantly heightened, signaling the gravity of the proceedings.

Barriers have been placed along Parliament Road, rendering it inaccessible to both motorists and pedestrians. A heavy police presence has been deployed, with both uniformed and plainclothes officers guarding the area and preventing unauthorized access. Notably, City Hall Way and Harambee Avenue have also been restricted as security measures tighten.

The Senate has begun hearing the impeachment case against Gachagua, following the National Assembly’s approval of the motion to remove him from office last week. Over the next two days, the 67-member Senate will weigh the charges brought against the embattled Deputy President, who could be permanently barred from holding public office if at least 45 senators support any of the 11 charges.

Political insiders reveal that Gachagua is banking on internal divisions within the ruling Kenya Kwanza alliance and fractures in the Azimio coalition to help him secure enough support to survive the vote. With Mashujaa Day approaching on October 20, rumors are swirling that Gachagua’s potential replacement could already be lined up.

This impeachment marks a critical moment in Gachagua’s political career. Should the Senate vote in favor of his removal, he will be disqualified from holding any public office for life under the country’s leadership and integrity laws. Gachagua is expected to present his defense in person at the Senate on Thursday as he battles to save his position.
