Kenya Power has unveiled plans to establish 45 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in six counties over the next year, aiming to bolster EV adoption and expand e-mobility infrastructure across the country.

Charging Stations in Strategic Locations
Speaking at the 2025 E-Mobility Conference and Expo in Nairobi, Kenya Power Managing Director Dr. Joseph Siror disclosed that the chargers would be installed in Nairobi, Nyeri, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Taita-Taveta.
Six of these stations are earmarked for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), complementing three existing charging points in Nairobi.
“We are collaborating with private sector stakeholders to assess the energy and infrastructure requirements in the e-mobility space. This collaboration will inform strategies to accelerate EV adoption in Kenya,” Dr. Siror explained.
Growing EV Adoption in Kenya
New data from the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK) shows significant growth in EV registrations, with 9,047 EVs currently on Kenyan roads—up from 2,694 in 2023 and 5,294 in 2024. Despite this growth, EVs account for only 0.2% of Kenya’s total registered vehicles.
Government policies, including an e-mobility electricity tariff and tax incentives, have fueled this growth. However, the high upfront cost of EVs, largely driven by battery expenses, remains a barrier to widespread adoption.
Efforts to Lower EV Costs
Kenya Power is exploring initiatives to reduce EV costs, including the establishment of local battery assembly plants.
“In addition to nationwide charging infrastructure, we are investigating the feasibility of local battery production to make EVs more affordable for Kenyans,” Dr. Siror said.
Future of E-Mobility in Kenya
Kenya Power’s efforts come at a time when the e-mobility sector is gaining momentum, with increased private-sector participation and growing awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of electric vehicles.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy solutions and promoting sustainable transport systems in Kenya.
