A Nakuru court has ordered the detention of six suspects implicated in the fatal shooting of a police officer during a patrol in the Freehold area on Sunday night. The suspects will remain in custody for 30 days to allow thorough investigations into the crime.

Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet approved the detention request on Tuesday, citing compelling reasons presented by the investigation team. The time will be used to conduct critical procedures, including ballistic analysis, witness interviews, identification parades, and mental evaluations of the accused.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred during a patrol when the officer and his two colleagues were ambushed. While the officer succumbed to his injuries, the two other officers were hospitalized.

The six suspects, identified as John Njau Ndung’u, Chacha Peter Marwa, William Nyahili Rioba, Emmanuel Muita Muita, Nyahili Nyamuhaga Magige, and Catherine Nkatha Zakayo, were apprehended during an intensive operation.

Evidence Linked to the Case

During the arrests, the suspects reportedly led investigators to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in the shooting.

An earlier report from Bondeni Police Station detailed additional items found with the suspects, including four mobile phones, various SIM cards, bus tickets, and a motorcycle.

Court Proceedings

While the suspects appeared before the court, no formal charges were filed at the time. All except Catherine Nkatha consented to the detention orders issued by the magistrate.

The extended custody aims to give investigators adequate time to piece together evidence and build a strong case against the suspects.

Broader Implications

The case has drawn attention to the rising crime rate in Nakuru and the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Authorities have called for enhanced security measures to safeguard both officers and the public.
