Meta Description: Caleb Amaswache, former Vihiga Deputy Governor, shares his struggle with financial challenges after leaving office, now earning a meager Sh300 daily selling firewood.

From Deputy Governor to Firewood Seller: Caleb Amaswache’s Journey
Caleb Amaswache, once a prominent figure in Vihiga County’s leadership as Deputy Governor, now finds himself selling firewood at Lwanda Market to make ends meet. His daily earnings of Sh300 barely cover basic needs, forcing him to make difficult choices between feeding his family and paying school fees.
Amaswache served as Deputy Governor from 2013 to 2017, working alongside Governor Moses Akaranga. His tenure offered the perks of power, including bodyguards, official vehicles, and a substantial salary. However, his fortunes changed after the 2017 elections when Dr. Wilberforce Ottichilo won the gubernatorial race, leaving Amaswache out of office.
Struggles After Leadership
In a candid interview with Citizen TV, Amaswache revealed the harsh realities of his post-political life. His financial struggles have intensified, with his daughter set to join university and requiring Sh200,000 for admission.
“I do not have enough capital. There are people willing to sell me logs, but I can’t afford them. The little money I make goes to school fees,” he lamented.
Amaswache also spoke of the loneliness and betrayal he has faced, with many former associates distancing themselves.
“When you’re in power, everyone respects you, but when you’re out, you see their true colors,” he reflected.
A Call for Support
Amaswache has appealed to the government for assistance, requesting opportunities to rebuild his life.
“I served honestly and didn’t use my position to loot public resources. I hope the government, including President William Ruto, will consider helping former leaders like me,” he said.
While his story contrasts sharply with that of other politicians who secure lucrative roles or maintain influence after leaving office, Amaswache’s integrity has won him the admiration of many Kenyans.
Public Reaction
Netizens have praised Amaswache for his honesty during his tenure, contrasting it with the corruption scandals often associated with Kenyan politicians. Many have called on the government to extend support to the former leader, highlighting the need for systems that ensure smooth transitions for those exiting public service.
