In a swift and decisive response to the tragic death of an 11-month-old boy at Igegania Level Four Hospital, the Kiambu County government has fired four doctors, a nurse, and a clinical officer for negligence. The healthcare workers were found to have failed to attend to the infant despite repeated pleas from the family.
The incident has sparked public outrage, highlighting systemic issues within healthcare delivery in the region.

Investigation and Immediate Action
Dr. Elias Maina, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services, announced the terminations after an internal investigation confirmed the medical staff’s inaction.
“Every life is precious and sacred. The failure of these healthcare workers to respond promptly to this child’s critical needs is inexcusable. We have concluded the disciplinary process and summarily dismissed the four doctors, the nurse, and the clinical officer involved,” said Dr. Maina.
To ensure continuity of service at the hospital, the county has already replaced the dismissed staff with equally qualified professionals.
Family’s Ordeal
James Muiruri, the baby’s grandfather, expressed his devastation and frustration with the hospital’s staff.
“There was no one available to assist us. I had to reach out to the governor directly for help,” Muiruri stated.
The family recounted how they sought an oxygen cylinder to stabilize the baby, who was struggling to breathe, but their requests went unanswered. Despite efforts to transfer the child to a private facility, the family faced financial challenges and a lack of ambulance services, leading to the tragic outcome.
Social Media Uproar
The story gained widespread attention after a video clip went viral on social media, showing Muiruri carrying his grandson. The video revealed the heartbreaking moments after the infant’s death due to a lack of medical care.
The family disclosed that the child had been diagnosed with pneumonia but received minimal intervention at the hospital.
“Instead of treatment, they only provided oxygen without medication. It was clear there was no adequate care,” Muiruri told Citizen TV.
Broader Implications
This tragedy coincided with a doctors’ strike at Igegania Level Four Hospital, exacerbating the challenges faced by patients. The Kiambu County government has vowed to take additional steps to prevent such incidents in the future, including reinforcing emergency response protocols and addressing labor disputes within its healthcare facilities.
The incident underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms in public healthcare, particularly in ensuring accountability and improving access to critical resources.
