A routine security patrol in Thika West, Kiambu County, took a tragic turn on Thursday afternoon when Police Constable Bernard Koome was fatally shot by an armed assailant. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised fresh concerns about officer safety in the line of duty.


Routine Patrol Turns Deadly

According to police reports, PC Koome and a colleague were patrolling the Cravers area when they spotted a suspicious motorcycle. Upon attempting to intercept the rider, the suspect abandoned the bike and fled on foot, firing indiscriminately at the officers.

“In the process, he shot PC Bernard Koome in the neck. Officers pursued the suspect, who continued firing into the air as he fled,” the report disclosed.

Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in Thika, Koome succumbed to his injuries during treatment.


Evidence Found at the Scene

A search of the crime scene uncovered key evidence, including two spent 9mm cartridges and a CZ pistol magazine containing four rounds of ammunition. These findings are expected to aid investigators in identifying the assailant.


Intensive Manhunt Launched

A full-scale manhunt is now underway to capture the suspect, with additional security personnel deployed to enhance patrols in the region. Law enforcement agencies are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the attack.
