Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda has assured the public that security forces are fully prepared to manage the upcoming June 25, 2025, demonstrations. These protests commemorate the first anniversary of the historic Gen Z protests that shook the nation last year.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Seda confirmed that police had received official communication from the event organizers and outlined plans to ensure safety for all participants and the general public.
Enhanced Security Plans in Place
“We have comprehensive plans to provide adequate security. Every person, whether participating in the demonstrations or not, will be safe,” Seda assured.
The commander emphasized that the police are committed to maintaining peace and urged demonstrators to adhere to lawful conduct.
“Let’s stick to peaceful demonstrations. Avoid any actions that may provoke law enforcement or disrupt the activities of those not involved in the protests,” Seda appealed.
He reminded the public that June 25 is a working day, and businesses, hotels, and other operations will be ongoing. “It’s counterproductive to turn peaceful demonstrations into violent confrontations that disrupt the lives of others,” he noted.
Lessons from Past Protests
Commander Seda cited incidents from recent protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District, where confrontations between civilians and police escalated into violence.
“We are here to provide security, not to engage in conflicts with the public. However, provocations such as those seen last week can lead to reactive measures,” he warned.
Remembering the Historic Gen Z Protests
The June 25 protests mark the anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z demonstrations, a pivotal moment in Kenya’s history. The event saw young protesters breaking through police barricades and storming Parliament as lawmakers debated the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
During the unrest, sections of Parliament were set ablaze, and police used live rounds to disperse the crowd, resulting in numerous injuries. Amnesty International Kenya reported significant casualties during the clashes.
Police Commitment to Public Safety
Seda reassured both demonstrators and non-demonstrators that the police are prepared to protect everyone during the anniversary protests. “Our goal is to ensure the safety of all while upholding the right to peaceful demonstrations,” he stated.
As Kenya reflects on the historic Gen Z protests, the focus remains on fostering a balance between exercising democratic rights and maintaining public order.
