A tragic incident at the Rwanyambo Police Post in Nyandarua County has led to the interdiction of the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) after a detained woman suffered a miscarriage while in police custody.

In a press release issued on Thursday evening, National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that the officer in charge had been relieved of their duties with immediate effect pending investigations.
Nyaga emphasized that the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), in partnership with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), has taken over the matter to ensure a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The NPS remains unwavering in its commitment to serving and protecting the public, while upholding the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms. Updates on the investigation will be provided as progress is made,” Nyaga stated.
Public Reaction and Investigative Measures
The incident has sparked outrage among members of the public and human rights advocates, who are calling for swift justice. Initial reports indicate the woman was held at the police post under unclear circumstances when she experienced complications that led to the loss of her pregnancy.
Both the IAU and IPOA have pledged to leave no stone unturned in their investigations, including reviewing the station’s protocols and interviewing officers and witnesses present during the incident.
The NPS spokesperson reassured the public that those found culpable will face legal consequences, adding that the agency takes matters involving human rights violations seriously.
This case comes amid growing scrutiny of police conduct in the country, with calls for reforms to ensure accountability and the safeguarding of detainees’ welfare.
