A popular Kenyan TikToker, openly part of the LGBTQ community, has sparked heated debate after paying her own dowry in an unusual traditional ceremony in Machakos.
The flamboyant content creator, known online as Emmashir, arrived at her parents’ homestead in style, accompanied by a convoy of cars, before proudly presenting the dowry items herself.
Traditionally, dowry is presented by a man to the bride’s family. However, in a twist that shocked many, her parents gladly accepted the items, breaking cultural expectations.
Witnesses described the atmosphere as “unreal,” with neighbours whispering in disbelief while others quickly reached for their phones to capture the rare spectacle. Videos from the ceremony have since gone viral on TikTok and Facebook, sparking intense conversations around culture, modernity, and the changing face of African traditions.
While some Kenyans online praised Emma’s boldness and independence, others condemned the move, arguing it undermines long-held African customs and disrespects the dowry system.
In a previous interview, Emma openly stated she has no plans of getting married, affirming her LGBTQ identity and lifestyle choices.
