Wednesday, September 10, 2025 – What appeared to be a picture-perfect marriage on social media has turned into a horrifying tragedy in Kisii County, after a domestic row allegedly escalated into a deadly blaze that claimed the life of a young woman and left her husband hospitalized in critical condition.
According to preliminary reports, the couple, who were well-known in their neighborhood and frequently showcased their “happy union” online, had been dealing with hidden marital conflicts for some time.
Investigators revealed that on Sunday, the husband allegedly carried home a container of petrol, claiming it was intended for killing bedbugs. However, events took a darker turn the following morning.
On Monday, after reportedly sending their house help to a nearby shop, flames engulfed the family home in a fierce inferno. Witnesses said the fire was so intense it caused a nearby gas cylinder to explode, amplifying the destruction.
Tragically, the woman, who was reportedly locked inside her bedroom from the outside, could not escape the raging flames and died on the spot.
The man sustained severe burns and is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he remains under close medical supervision.
Police officers have since launched investigations to establish whether the fire was truly accidental or a calculated act of femicide disguised as a household mishap.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals and online users, who lament the alarming rise of gender-based violence in Kenya. Many have called for justice, while others pointed out the dangers of couples masking troubled marriages behind glamorous social media posts.
