Police in Somalia have arrested four young men accused of mocking President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in a viral TikTok dance video.

According to a statement released by the police, the suspects are currently in custody and will be formally charged in court.

the viral dance video that sparked arrests

The controversial clip shows several men dancing to a remix of the president’s 2022 campaign song, but with lyrics altered to include derogatory remarks aimed at the head of state. Though the original video has since been deleted, copies continue to circulate widely on TikTok and other platforms, fueling heated reactions online.

crackdown on online insults and immorality

This case marks the first time in Somalia that influencers have been arrested for directly targeting a top politician. Previously, TikTok users have faced punishment for spreading clan-based insults, incitement, or so-called immoral content.

In August 2024, for example, seven TikTokers were sentenced to six months in prison by a Mogadishu court for provoking unrest and promoting immorality on social media.

Police spokesman Gen Abdifatah Aden warned that similar acts of mockery or disrespect towards national institutions and leaders will not be tolerated, stressing that offenders would “face the full force of the law.”

social media freedom vs. state control

The arrests have reignited a national debate on freedom of expression in Somalia. While some citizens believe the young men’s actions were harmless political satire, others support the crackdown, arguing that insulting leaders undermines fragile governance in a country still battling political instability.

tiktok’s controversial role in somalia

TikTok remains extremely popular in Somalia and among the diaspora, especially among youth who use it for satire, political commentary, business, and entertainment. However, authorities have repeatedly raised concerns about the platform.

In 2023, the Somali government even considered banning TikTok, citing risks such as the spread of extremist propaganda, misinformation, and erosion of social and cultural values. The proposed ban was shelved after strong public opposition, but officials have continued to monitor the platform closely.

The latest arrests are now fueling speculation that tighter restrictions on TikTok may once again be on the horizon.
