What was billed as “the wedding of the year” turned into one of the most talked-about influencer controversies in Kenya. Dozens of TikTok stars and social media influencers dressed in their most elegant outfits, spent thousands of shillings, and cleared their schedules to attend what they believed was Cashmeer Sayyid’s glamorous wedding to a Congolese man.
However, upon arrival, they were shocked to discover that the event was not a wedding at all — it was the official launch of Cashmeer’s new school. The unexpected twist left many influencers feeling betrayed, emotionally drained, and financially burdened.
Influencers Count the Cost: Money, Time, and Missed Opportunities
For most influencers, attending the event wasn’t as simple as showing up. Many revealed that they had spent heavily on designer outfits, professional makeup, transportation, and even expensive gifts. Some skipped important personal commitments to be there.
TikTok personality Hanna Benta admitted she brought a large amount of cash as a wedding gift and had even prepared emotionally for the ceremony.
“I was ready to cry during the vows. I told my makeup artist to give me powder to touch up my tears. Thank God I didn’t bring a money bouquet — where would I have given it?” Hanna lamented.
Emotional Reactions: ‘We Feel Used’
Content creator Winnie Njenga voiced her frustration, questioning why Cashmeer had to deceive guests.
“I skipped my cousin’s ruracio to be here, and I spent so much. People would have still attended if you were honest. This was unnecessary. I feel used.”
Similarly, influencer Pritty Vishy, who attended just days after a cosmetic procedure, expressed disbelief.
“I came with fresh wounds thinking I was celebrating your big day, only to realise there’s no wedding. Cashmeer, you really had us twisted.”
Business Sacrifices and Public Apologies
Popular TikToker Gloria Ntazola revealed she closed her business for the day, issuing an apology to her clients.
“My friend had a big day, and there was no way I could open. I’ll resume work on Monday. Sorry for the inconvenience,” she posted.
Cashmeer’s Explanation: A Childhood-Inspired Project
Despite the backlash, Cashmeer maintained that the event was meant to be a celebration of her new school — a dream inspired by her childhood experiences. The glamorous setting, complete with décor and VIP invitations, was intended to mark the beginning of her educational venture, though her approach to inviting guests has drawn widespread criticism.
Why This Event Sparked an Online Uproar
The incident has sparked conversations about influencer culture, transparency in event invitations, and the lengths content creators go to for appearances. The story continues to trend on TikTok, Instagram, and Kenyan entertainment blogs, making it one of the most viral topics in 2025 so far.
