In recent months, a rising number of nightclubs in Nairobi and other cities have adopted the controversial practice of dressing female hostesses in uniforms resembling those worn by schoolgirls. While the attire in question did not directly represent any particular school, critics argue that the resemblance is clear enough to raise ethical and moral concerns.
Social media users were quick to call out the nightclub, warning that sexualizing school uniforms in adult entertainment settings encourages harmful behavior. This, they said, creates a disturbing link between underage innocence and adult fantasies.
Lawmakers and Leaders Speak Out
Githunguri Member of Parliament Alice Wahome condemned the nightclub trend, arguing that the practice is “a dangerous form of child sexualization disguised as entertainment.” She warned that the normalization of such imagery risks fueling pedophilia, incest, and sexual assault cases, which are already rising across the country.
“This is not advertisement; this is sexual objectification. As parents and leaders, we must protect our children’s innocence instead of trivializing it for profit,” Wahome emphasized.
Former Nairobi MCA Ann Thumbi echoed similar concerns, pointing out that what may appear as harmless marketing is actually a subtle but dangerous attempt to normalize predatory behavior.
“Not everything legal is moral, and not every trend is worth copying. Our children’s safety and values must come first,” she warned.
Uniforms as a Symbol of Innocence
Experts note that school uniforms in Kenya represent more than just clothing—they symbolize discipline, equality, and the innocence of childhood. They reduce peer pressure associated with fashion, minimize social class divisions, and foster unity and belonging among learners.
Using such attire in adult entertainment settings, critics argue, erodes cultural values and undermines the protective symbolism associated with students.

The viral nightclub incident emerged just as schools prepare to reopen after the holiday break, which many netizens pointed out was especially troubling.
