Police in Nairobi have arrested a suspect behind an elaborate counterfeit honey production racket that has been supplying fake products to unsuspecting consumers across the city. The illegal operation was uncovered on Tuesday, October 7, following a coordinated sting led by officers from the Nairobi Regional Police Command in Umoja 2, Buruburu Estate.
According to the police report, the suspect was found running a fully equipped makeshift factory where the fake honey was being processed, packaged, and branded to mimic genuine products. The bust came after weeks of intelligence gathering on the circulation of substandard honey brands in retail outlets across the capital.
During the raid, officers seized a range of items believed to have been used in the production of the counterfeit product, including chemical additives, heating equipment, a gas cylinder, empty jars, and several bottles filled with the fake honey ready for distribution.
“During the operation, officers arrested one suspect and recovered several items believed to have been used in the manufacture of the fake honey. The recovered exhibits included finished counterfeit honey, chemical substances, a heating coil, and a gas cylinder,” the police report stated.
Samples of the seized products have been forwarded to government laboratories for testing to establish their composition and potential health risks. The suspect is currently being held at Ruai Police Station pending arraignment, where he will face charges of food adulteration, illegal manufacturing, and endangering public health.
The National Police Service (NPS) has since vowed to intensify nationwide crackdowns on counterfeit food and beverages, citing the growing threat posed by such operations to public safety.
In recent months, authorities have recorded a surge in the sale of fake honey and cooking oil, with several suspects arrested in connection to similar schemes. Just last month, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) seized counterfeit cooking oil worth over Ksh100 million in Mombasa’s Shimanzi area, underscoring the scale of the problem.
Police are urging consumers to be vigilant and verify the authenticity of food products before purchase to help curb the spread of counterfeit goods that threaten both health and the economy.
