Former defender Vincent Nyaberi was on Monday unveiled as National Super League (NSL) Mara Sugar head coach.
He takes over from Francis Xavier who quit three weeks ago to join Sofapaka as assistant coach.
Nyaberi will be deputized by Godfrey Naibei who has been in charge of the team in an acting capacity, team manager Thomas Mboya said on Monday.
Mboya said Nyaberi’s major task will be to help the team qualify for the Kenya Premier League next season.
Nyaberi, a former defender, previously coached the defunct Thika United and Shabana FC. He was among 25 coaches who graduated with a CAF B certificate on Friday at the Kenya School of Special Education.
Mboya said: “We settled on Nyaberi because he is experienced and has handled several teams in the NSL. Having a CAF B license is an added advantage because if we qualify to KPL, we will maintain him.”
“Our objective remains an automatic qualification for the Kenya Premier League. Nyaberi signed a contract until the end of the season but renewable depending on performance,” added
Even though he watched the team’s 2-1 loss to Mulembe United at Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday, his first game in charge of the Cane Millers will be against Mombasa Elite on Saturday at Awendo Green Stadium.
Mara Sugar has gone three games without a win after the departure of Xavier. They have lost two and drawn one.
Consequently, they have dropped to third on the log with 14 points from eight matches. Mathare United leads the log with 16 points followed by Kisumu All Stars with 15 points.
Last season, the team finished fourth in the second-tier league and missed a playoff slot by a whisker.
