During his tenure at Mogonga PAG Secondary School, Haron Onchong’a produced several international athletes among them World 800m champion Mary Moraa.
Onchong’a, now the principal at Riooga Secondary School in Nyamira is keen to produce more athletes.
Recently, Athletics Kenya identified Riooga as a youth training camp ahead of the World Under 20 championships scheduled for Lima, Peru in August next year.
The camp will be launched on November 26 by the Athletics Kenya Youth committee led by Barnaba Korir.
“I want to thank Athletics Kenya for recognizing me and opening a youth camp here. There is a lot of talent in Gusii and I want to continue nurturing them,” said Onchong’a.
He said already, he has identified 60 boys and girls aged 19 years and below for the one month training camp. “Most of them are primary school pupils. My focus is to nurture and develop them,” said Onchong’a.
During his tenure at Mogonga, the school dominated secondary school athletics championships and also lifted the national secondary schools volleyball title.
Other camps in Gusii region are Keberesi Secondary School in Kisii County and Kiendegemixed Secondary School in Nyamira County.
Korir confirmed that the government has already released funds for the camps. “We want to continue dominating the world. That’s why we have identified the camps which will be funded by the government,” said Korir.
Recently, Kisii Governor Simba Arati announced that he will establish talent centers in the devolved unit.
