Shabana’s coach Sammy Okoth resigned on Sunday after the team’s humiliating 4-0 defeat against Ulinzi Stars.

He announced his resignation in the post-match press conference at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.

“We have played a couple of matches and lost but we have never been humiliated this way. I want to thank the management for this opportunity and I wish the team well in the league,” said a disappointed Okoth who guided the team to the top tier league after 17 years in the cold.

He thanked the club’s fans for turning up in large numbers to support the team in both home and away matches. “The loss is bitter to take but I implore fans to continue rallying behind the team,” added the coach.

The club has immediately started looking for Okoth’s replacement with immediate former Kenya Police coach Francis Baraza one of the leading candidates.

Baraza has been mentioned alongside current Kenya Police assistant coach Salim Babu. Other names being floated are former KCB coach Zedekiah Zico Otieno and immediate former Darajani Gogo coach Caleb Aringa.

Club secretary General Elizaphan Kerama said the resignation caught them by surprise but wished him well. “We must move very fast and get a new coach on board most likely before the Gor Mahia game. We must get our campaign back on track,” said the secretary general.

He said the club needs a coach who has handled a team in the Kenya Premier League. Kerama apologized to the club’s fans following the loss.
