Koderobara High on Wednesday lifted the Nyanza Region Secondary Schools soccer title after a hardfought 2-1 win over Matutu PAG.
In the game that was played at Moi Stadium in Kisumu and watched by a capacity crowd, Matutu took the lead in the 13th minute through Gerald Gadson.
Felix Casilas added Koderobara’s advantage in the 45th minute to give them a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Matutu dominated and were rewarded when Tony Oloo sloted home a penalty after Dominic Maragia was felled in the box.
Matutu continued with their dominance but failed to convert their numerous scoring chances. Koderobara held on to win their first regional title.
Jacob Aloo, the Koderobara coach hailed his charges for withstanding the pressure throughout the second half. “It was an evenly balanced game that would gobe either way. It was our day,” said Aloo.
He added: “We now turn our focus to the national championships and since we are hosting, we want the trophy to remain here.”
His Matutu PAG counterpart Joseph Ongoro said: “We missed several clearcut chances. Kodebobara got their two chances and utilized them. Luck was not on our side today.“However, I’m proud of the boys. Nobody gave us a chance to reach the finals. My boys were also affected by the artificial turf but I’m proud of them,” added Ongoro.
He further revealed that he missed three key players who were injured during the chaos in their semi final against Agoro Sare at Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho on Friday, last week.
Nyanza Regional Deputy Director of Education in charge of co-corricular activites Ebbie Kegode was the chief guest. Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association led by the chairman Otieno Oloo, Tom Onsongo (treasurer), Tom Odhiambo (secretary) and Siaya County chairman Ngla Mbuor also graced the game.
