Veteran coach Zedekiah Zico Otieno returned to Gor Mahia as an assistant coach because Micheal Nam will be away for up to five months.

Zico was on Monday unveiled as coach Leonardo Martins Neiva’s assistant. Nam is set to travel to Uganda to complete his CAF A licensing course.

Zico was until Monday the head coach of struggling FKF Premier League side Sofapaka. Zico is a former Gor Mahia defender and coach.

The club will on Saturday face Naivas in the NSL/FKF play off first leg match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Coach Neiva’s first assignment will be the regional CECAFA Kagame Cup 2024 slated for July 8-12st in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.

The experienced coach takes over from Johnathan McKinstry who recently joined Gambia as the national head coach.

The Brazilian who will have the first task of leading the team at the CECAFA Kagame Cup is not new to the African setting after handing SC Vipers (Uganda), Young Africans SC (Tanzania), Al-Merriekh (Sudan) and South Africa’s Platinum Stars Youth side.

He has also coached teams in Brazil, Mynmar, Jamaica and Thailand.

Gor Mahia will attempt to win their fourth CECAFA Kagame Cup trophy in Tanzania.

Top teams from the CECAFA Zone will also use the regional tournament to prepare ahead of the start of the 2024/2025 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the TotalEnergies Confederation Cup.

Gor Mahia is shaking the transfer market with a reported capture of Posta Rangers midfielder Brian Musa, Ugandan midfielder Pius Akena, Congolese forward Gideon Bendeka from Rwandese club Etincelles.

Burundi international goal keeper Jonathan Nahimana has also been linked to K’Ogalo. Nahimana parted ways with Tanzania’s Namugongo FC following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
