The Kenyan team finished second only to the United States in the overall medal standings, clinching an impressive 11 medals — a feat that cemented their place among the world’s finest athletes. Their victories not only brought national pride but also translated into massive financial rewards.
Record-Breaking Payouts From World Athletics
According to World Athletics’ official prize structure, podium finishers earn lucrative cash prizes:
- Gold medalists take home USD 70,000 (approx. Ksh 9 million) each.
- Silver medalists earn USD 35,000 (approx. Ksh 4.5 million).
- Bronze medalists pocket USD 22,000 (approx. Ksh 2.8 million).
Kenya’s impressive medal haul saw the athletes collect a total of USD 604,000 (Ksh 78 million) from the championships alone.
Kenya’s Medal Breakdown In Tokyo
Kenya’s golden run began with Beatrice Chebet, who stormed to victory in the 10,000m final. Soon after, Peres Jepchirchir claimed top honors in the women’s marathon.
Rising star Faith Cherotich dominated the women’s 3000m steeplechase, while the ever-reliable Faith Kipyegon bagged gold in the women’s 1500m before adding a silver medal in the 5000m.
Emmanuel Wanyonyi delivered a powerful finish in the men’s 800m final, as Lillian Odira secured Kenya’s seventh gold medal with a late surge in her race. Chebet added a second gold in the 5000m, cementing her place as one of the championships’ standout performers.

Government Rewards Boost Payouts Further
On top of the international prize money, the Kenyan government will also reward the athletes under a new incentive structure announced by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya in August.
- Gold medalists will receive Ksh 3 million each (previously Ksh 750,000).
- Silver medalists will get Ksh 2 million each (previously Ksh 500,000).
- Bronze medalists will be awarded Ksh 1 million each (previously Ksh 350,000).
In total, the government payout adds Ksh 27 million to the athletes’ rewards, bringing their combined earnings to a staggering Ksh 103 million.
