After serving the country with the Malkia Strikers in the 2025 FIVB World Championship in Phuket, Thailand, trainer Azenga Mavisi has now trained his sights on reclaiming the National League title with Kenya Prisons women’s team.
Mavisi, who is Prisons assistant coach, was on the bench when the wardresses last won the title in 2021.
Kenya Pipeline are the defending champions of the league with the new season primed to serve off late October.
Mavisi was part of the Malkia Strikers’ technical bench that saw Kenya beat Vietnam 3-0(25-23,25-22,25-20) to finish third in Pool “G” behind heavyweights Poland and Germany.
Kenya snatched a set from Poland before they lost 1-3(17-25, 25-15,15-25,14-25).
The East Africans had lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-08, 25-18) to Germany in their opening pool match.
The win against Vietnam was not enough to help the Geoffrey Omondi-led side to proceed to the second round, with Poland and Germany who finished in the top two positions proceeding to Bangkok for the ongoing round of 16.
Anzenga, who was also making a bow on the Malkia Strikers technical bench, said it has been long since Prisons won the league, and they will strive to reclaim it.
“I have gathered enough experience and exposure and lessons to go share with my team back home. I believe the experience I have picked here will not go in vain. I had two players from Prisons and I believe they have also learned a thing or two that will be crucial for us in the League,“ said Anzenga, a former coach at The Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County.
Kenya Prisons players in the Malkia Strikers team were middle blocker Lorine Chebet and captain Meldina Sande.
Anzenga said the country should make plans to play more friendly matches against top-ranked nations like Poland and Germany.
“We have received a lot of positives from this championship. The players have showcased what they can do and no wonder countries like Italy, Germany are willing to play friendly matches against us and this is the type of arrangement we need to have going forward,” said the trainer.
He said the technical bench was looking at ways at which the national team can be training once every month so that the players can continue to gel.
