Sen. Esther Okenyuri has sought a statement from the Senate on the neglect of the role of the Abagusii Community in the fight for Kenyaβs independence.

The Senator wants the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare to furnish the Senate with a comprehensive index encompassing all references to the Abagusii people and their heroes, which explicitly acknowledges and chronicles the significant contributions made by the Abagusii Community during the struggle for Kenyaβs independence.
Further, the Committee should provide an analysis of the National Heroes Councilβs knowledge pertaining to Moraa wa Ngβiti, who was born in the mid-1800s in Gusiiland, with particular emphasis on her opposition against the British rule and her instrumental contribution to the pivotal Abagusii Rebellion of 1905.
Lastly, Sen. Okenyuri wants to know the state plans in place, if any, by the National Heroes Council to ensure recognition and immortalization of Moraa wa Ngβiti and to promote and entrench her name into national literature and in school curricula and place her at par with her contemporaries, such as MekatililiΒ waΒ Menza.
