Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has briefed the press on the recent murder investigations across the country.
He pointed out that between August to October 2022-2024, there has been a slight increase in murder cases.
In a press statement, Kanja said 339 murder cases have so far been recorded in 2024. This is against 336 cases recorded in 2023 and 341 in 2022.
Kanja cited the example of Willis Onyango Aiyeko, 52, whose body was retrieved from Mungowere stream, Khwisero subcounty. Aiyeko, who was employed by Wells Fargo, went missing on October 21, 2024. His body will be transferred from Siaya Teaching and Referral Hospital on Thursday to Nairobi for post-mortem.
Kanja also confirmed the body suspected to be that of Dela Ward MCA Yusuf Hussein, missing since September 13, 2024, is not his.
“Based on DNA samples obtained from the body and mother of the MCA, the post-mortem analysis has come out to conclude that the body is not for the said MCA,” Kanja said. He added that the DCI Wajir will initiate an inquest into the unidentified body. On the other hand, the Makadara DCI shall carry on with the investigations concerning the MCA’s case.
The body was treated to an autopsy by the Government Pathologist, Dr. Johansen Oduor on 21st October 2024 at Wajir County Referral Hospital in the presence of a family doctor, Dr. Daniel Zuriel and local MPs.
Kanja added, “I am also thinking of the gruesome murders of a family of three in Eastleigh whose bodies were found and are scheduled for post-mortem examination on Friday: Dahabo Daud Said-38, Amina Abdirashid Dahir-22 and Nusayba Abdi Mohammed-13 years old.” Residents of Eastleigh held protests on Thursday and demanded speedy investigations into the incident.
In Kajiado, Kanja cited the case of James Nyaata Onchiri, aged 62 years, an advocate whose five suspects appeared in court for custodial orders. The investigating team has until October 28, 2024, to conclude investigations.
Kanja confirmed that Seth Nyakio Njeri aged 23 years whose body was found in Thika on the 14th of October died of asphyxia due to manual strangulation.
The matter is under investigation by homicide investigations,” Kanja said. He urged the public to report any criminal activities or suspects to the DCI Homicide Unit or the nearest police station.
“We assure the public of our commitment to investigate these heinous acts of crime,” the police IG emphasized.
