In a recent incident off the coast of Yemen, the USS Carney, a US warship, engaged in a prolonged battle, intercepting 4 cruise missiles and 15 drones over a span of 9 hours. The projectiles, which were heading north along the Red Sea, were clearly targeted at Israel, raising concerns about escalating tensions in the region.
The USS Carney, an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer, detected the missiles and drones as they approached from Yemen. This encounter revealed a larger and more sustained threat than initially understood. The projectiles were intercepted using SM-2 surface-to-air missiles, launched from the USS Carney.

The situation highlights a worrying trend as conflicts extend beyond traditional borders. Apart from this incident, US and coalition forces in Syria and Iraq have faced repeated attacks. The Pentagon confirmed that the missiles were fired by Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen and were potentially aimed at Israeli targets. Some of these projectiles posed a risk to commercial aviation due to their altitude.
Notably, such interceptions by the US are rare, making this incident particularly significant, especially amid rising tensions in Israel. The recent attacks in Iraq and Syria, including drone strikes on US positions, have further escalated concerns.
While the US has not attributed these attacks to any specific group, past incidents suggest the involvement of Iranian proxies. The Pentagon, although tight-lipped about its intentions, emphasized its commitment to defending US and coalition forces against any threat. As the situation unfolds, the world watches closely, awaiting developments and hoping for a peaceful resolution to the escalating tensions in the region.
