APPROVAL FOR DORCAS ODUOR AND BEATRICE ASKUL: NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE GREENLIGHTS APPOINTMENTS

The National Assembly Committee on Appointments has approved the nominations of Dorcas Oduor and Beatrice Askul, respectively, for the position of Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development.
The committee report was laid before the National Assembly by the Minority Leader, Junet Mohamed.
“This House approves the appointment of the following persons: Beatrice Askul Moe as Cabinet Secretary, East African Community Affairs and Regional Development, and Dorcas Oduor as Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya,” the MP announced.
This followed their vetting on Friday, August 9, 2024.
The two will now await approval by the National Assembly plenary. Should they be approved, their names will then be submitted to President William Ruto for gazetting and formal appointment.
The last of President Ruto’s two appointees to the list in his latest batch of nominations are Dorcas Oduor and Beatrice Askul. Askul served as the Executive Committee Member in charge of Water and Sanitation in the Turkana County government.
She is a member of the Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party and served as a member of the ODM party’s National Elections Coordinating Committee.
The committee, consisting of three members, was mandated to preside over party elections while probing malpractices about ticket sales.
Beatrice Askul Moe is a social scientist and consultant specialist in behavioral and social change community development and management.
Dorcas Oduor is the nominee for Attorney General of Kenya and former Secretary for Public Prosecutions. If she is appointed, Oduor will become Kenya’s first woman Attorney General. Oduor’s record is rather something, prosecuting, among other heavyweight cases, the 1998 Nairobi bombing that killed 200 and the Chris Okemo extradition case.
She also contributed and is on record as having been in the team that prosecuted the case that came to be described as the hardest-fought and most bitterly-contested in the court martial case over nominations to the Police task force that established the Independent.
Both nominees will be part of President Ruto’s newly reconstituted Cabinet upon their confirmation. The new versatile Cabinet comes after President Ruto dissolved the entire Cabinet on July 11, 2024, following weeks of Kenyans protesting against the government.
