MERU GOVERNOR KAWIRA MWANGAZA VOWS 10-YEAR TERM AFTER COURT HALTS IMPEACHMENT

Embattled Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza on Thursday spent the day in her office in what seemed an effort to flex her muscles and tell the world that she was not ready to give in to myriad occurrences of late.
She expressed her wish to serve Meru County 24/7 for 10 years. “Kabati kabati kaende #MbeuyaNgai #KumiBilaBreak So help me God,” she posted on Facebook, reiterating her resolve to serve her full term.
However, it was an important decision by the High Court that ‘saved’ her from being impeached. A day before, the Senate upheld her impeachment decision of February 9, but a High Court judge, Justice Bahati Mwamuye, came to her rescue.
Mwamuye issued conservatory orders against Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, stopping him from declaring a vacancy in the governor’s office in the Kenya Gazette Notice.
Following the court decision, Mwangaza expressed relief and gratitude. She posted on social media, “Merciful God”, as a way of showing her gratitude for the legal outcome. Her use of social media to mark her legal victories has been a consistent feature throughout her saga of impeachment.
Aside from the court ruling, Mwangaza had something else to smile about after the Senate decided to conduct her impeachment trial on the floor of the House, plenary.
This was after the Senate threw out another proposition by the House Business Committee. The committee proposed the formation of an 11-member committee to probe into the allegations levelled against her. Mwangaza was upbeat that she would present her defence to all Senators which she responded to by stating, “Hallelujah” on X.
The Senate had upheld an impeachment against her earlier on Wednesday. This had been after two botched attempts by the Meru County Assembly to oust her.
On the last attempt, 40 members out of 69 had cast their votes to impeach her. The judgment by the Senate was inclined on three charges that she had been guilty of.
Trials and political turbulence have never been far when Mwangaza takes the lead. Despite such odds, her will to lead never seems to wane, as manifested in her very recent utterances and actions.
