AT LEAST TWO DEAD AND 10 AS SCHOOL BUS COLLIDES WITH TRAILER IN KIKUYU

At least two people lost their lives on Thursday night when a tragic accident occurred on Gitaru-Kikuyu Road in Kiambu County, leaving about ten others injured in the process.

A hired school bus was involved in the midnight collision with a stalled trailer. The driver of the hired school bus reportedly lost control and collided with a stalled trailer.

This incident took place at a notorious black spot known to be in a very dangerous condition because of the many road constructions in the area.

It is believed that, in his effort to avoid hitting the trailer head-on, the bus driver swerved off the road. He lost control, and the bus rolled over before landing into a ditch, which intensified the crash effect.

Children were not on board the bus, but there were passengers who had paid the bus to transport them. The impact of the accident crushed the vehicles, and two people were confirmed dead when the emergency services arrived on the scene.

Emergency services were quickly responsive in the scene and transported around ten of the injured to hospitals in the vicinity of the area.

Kiambu County police boss Michael Muchiri said an inquiry has been launched to unearth the cause of the incident.

The Kenya National Highways Authority said the area that the incident occurred in is under construction. Traffic has been diverged after it was permitted to cure the construction work as an increase in the effort to curb road accidents.

This has confirmed fears that the road has never proven safe with locals always citing it as a site where serious incidents occur frequently.

This has seen the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) come out and remind road users to be more careful, especially with the increased new school term, as the traffic becomes heavy, and congestion is felt.
