Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now challenges President William Ruto to drop alleged plans to impeach him, in a bid to give him an opportunity to serve his five-year term as his deputy.
Addressing a rally in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, Gachagua said the President should allow him to be his deputy for the remaining three years.
“There are many things that are stuck. Let the remaining three years be a period of working for Kenyans,” Gachagua said.
He added that it will be up to Ruto to decide what happens after the term ends. “We will respect his decision,” he noted.
He insisted that they had to focus on developing the country. “We need to construct roads, reform the coffee and tea sectors. Many projects started by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta are not complete,” he said.
He also called on MPs to desist from distractions in Parliament and let the Executive do its work. “Let the President and I do the work of the Executive,” Gachagua said.
It has widened the rift in the opposition coalition, Azimio La Umoja. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa vowed to marshal opposition troops to save Gachagua from what they described as a political witch-hunt.
Both leaders maintained that they would never support an impeachment focusing only on Gachagua. They said any such move must also involve President Ruto.
Meanwhile, Kanu, another affiliate of Azimio, remains defiant, maintaining that both Ruto and Gachagua must be impeached. Azimio Minority Leader Junet Mohammed has reportedly spearheaded a petition in the National Assembly to have Gachagua impeached
