Opposition leader Kalonzo alongside Wanjigi and Wamalwa addressing journalist outside the church
Opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and politician Jimi Wanjigi were locked out of attending a service at AIC Kasina Church in Mlolongo. Police had issued orders to bar entry of the leaders who were set to attend a church service as part of their campaign activities.
We are here to interact with our supporters and worship together, but it’s unfortunate that we are being barred,” Musyoka said in a press briefing outside the church. “This is an absolute attempt to muzzle us. We will not be silenced,” Wamalwa added.
The opposition coalition was forced by the police action to cancel two rallies that were set for Kitengela and Mlolongo. An irate Jimi Wanjigi declared, “We have a right to assemble and speak to our people. This is not just an attack on us; it’s an attack on democracy itself.”
The police have, however, advanced no specific reasons for such denial of access, hence sparking widely speculative reasons that might have informed such a decision. Supporters of the opposition claim outrage, adding that it was an infringement on their democratic rights and freedoms.
